Leading Russian opposition activist Sergei Udaltsov was arrested by Moscow police as protesters continued to demonstrate against Vladimir Putin’s rule.
Udaltsov was one of hundreds to be detained by the authorities as they try to control the public dissent surrounding Putin’s resumption of the Russian presidency.
Duma member Ilya Ponomaryov and television host Ksenia Sobchak who is said to have fallen out with Putin were among those picked up by police.
Russia’s lower house yesterday confirmed former president Dmitry Medvedev as prime minister, completing the job swap and reinforcing the two men’s grip on power.
