Up to 14 people are reported dead and more than 100 wounded, after a double bomb attack in Russia’s Dagestan region.

A suicide bomber apparently detonated a device near a police post, on the outskirts of the capital Makhachkala. The second explosion came as emergency teams flooded the scene.

Russia’s interior minister has held an emergency video conference with local officials.

The attacks, the worst in months, undermine Russian efforts to contain an Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus.

Dagestan has become the epicentre of trouble, after two separatist wars in Chechnya.

The latest attacks come just days before Vladimir Putin is sworn in as Russian president.
