As the fifth anniversary of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann approaches, British police have issued a computer-generated photo of how she might look now and say they still hope to find her alive. They want the case re-opened.
Det. Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said: “Today, why we are here is to specifically appeal for information around her being alive.
“If you know, having carefully looked at this image, if you know where Madeleine McCann is now, or you have information as to what has happened to Madeleine McCann, then please make contact with us.”
Madeleine disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment in a Portuguese resort, while her parents Kate and Gerry were dining at a nearby restaurant with seven friends.
UK police began a new probe last year and have identified what they say are 195 “investigative opportunites,” from the mass of evidence gathered during the inquiry.
McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said:
“The family will draw great strength from this, they do see it as positive and they are hoping and praying, as they have been for five years, that this will lead to that breakthrough and that somebody somewhere will recognise her and she will still be able to come home.”
However, any decision to formally reopen the case would have to be taken by Portuguese authorities.
Until then the McCann’s nightmare continues.
