Polls have opened in France in the 2012 presidential election, with 10 candidates vying to make the head-to-head runoff on May 6th between the top two finishers tonight.

The polls say these will be the left’s François Hollande, and the right’s Nicolas Sarkozy.

Hollande is also forecast to win the second round, ending President Sarkozy’s five-year reign, and returning a Socialist to the pinnacle of French politics for the first time in nearly two decades.

Sarkozy has campaigned his way back into contention from record levels of unpopularity, but both mainstream contenders may be hit by absenteeism giving more weight to votes cast for smaller, more extreme parties.
