The population of west Africa’s Guinea Bissau have been voting in presidential elections. Former Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Junior is one of nine candidates to replace Malam Bacai Sanha, who died in January following a long illness.

Chronic instability in the former Portuguese colony has seen three leaders overthrown and one assassinated since independence in 1974. Guinea Bissau is one of the world’s poorest countries and is heavily reliant on foreign aid.
