A 28-year-old woman has become the first female metro driver in the United Arab Emirates and the Middle East.

Mariam Al Safar, a native Emirati, will be regularly at the controls on Dubai’s metro system.

Just 12 percent of its workforce are locals, some 135 members of staff.
