The Swiss Football League on Wednesday stripped Neuchatel of their licence and booted them out of the country’s first division following alleged irregularities in the take over of the club by a Russian billionaire.

The League (SFL) said Neuchatel, who have appealed the decision, was suspected of falsifying a bank document produced as a financial guarantee last year by now club owner Bulat Chagaev.

Chagaev, who comes from the volatile region of Chechny, bought the club in May.

Since then he has sacked four coaches, faced a boycott by fans, fired several players and even the entire administrative staff leaving the club unable to print tickets for the opening game of the season.

Since his arrival he has also parted company with all of the club’s sponsors.
