Japan: "the most frightening experience of my life"

To witness courage and dignity at first hand is truly inspirational and the Japanese displayed both in abundance as the country wrestled with the March earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster.

After arriving in Tokyo in the evening we climbed into a car and headed to the north east of the country, the area worst hit by the tragedy.

This involved skirting the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, it was without doubt the most frightening experience of my life. Radiation is invisible and the imagination takes over, everyone in the vehicle fell silent as we passed the plant, it seemed to last forever.

Once we arrived in Otsuchi the devastation was breathtaking, nothing remained except charred rubble and traumatised people as they went about collecting the remnants of a previous life to carry with them into the future.

Thank you Japan for showing me the true meaning of fortitude and heroism.
