In Morocco, Abdelilah Benkirane the leader of the moderate Islamist Justice and Development Party- the PJD – is set to lead the new government.
He and his supporters have been celebrating after partial results from Friday’s election gave the party 80 seats in the 395-seat assembly. That would make it the largest party and give it the right to lead.
“We are waiting now for the King to ask us to start consultations to form a new Government,” said Benkirane, “we are already used to dealing with the Democratic Coalition and we are also open to talk to other parties.“
That Coalition for Democracy party is made up of eight groups and is led by the outgoing Prime Minister, Abbas Al Fassi. Under the reforms introduced by King Mohammed which led to these elections the biggest party will have the power to elect the new prime minister.
