Stabilising the natural gas market has been the focus of a summit in the Qatari capital Doha.
Members of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), representing the world’s leading producers, debated the benefits of fixing the price of natural gas and pegging it to the cost of oil.
Representatives from Russia and Iran were among those at the GECF’s first ever summit, but no immediate solution came out of the discussions.
Euronews reporter Maha Barada said: “The forum has given no indication of how it’s going to control natural gas production or prices, but efforts to reassure consuming countries was the most prominent feature of the Doha summit. While natural gas exporters have united to boost the market, it is still too early to talk about a cartel similar to OPEC.”
