Puerto Rican hip-hop duo Calle 13 took a record nine awards at the Latin Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles – and that despite not getting much airtime in several countries.
That is because of the highly politicised lyrics, and singer René Perez’s acceptance speech was in the same vein.
He said he dedicated the award to all Latin Americans because they had taught him how to write about the topic.
In particular he singled out the current student struggle in Latin America, especially in Colombia and Chile.
And just after being given a Hollywood walk of fame star, Colombian superstar Shakira scooped best female pop vocal for her “Sale el Sol” album and a special person of the year award recognising her philanthropic works as much as for her musical talents.
