Sarkozy pushes financial transaction tax idea

Speaking at the G20, President Sarkozy said there was agreement on the need to be firm on Greece, and he praised Italy for taking measures to balance its budget.

He also said France, Germany and other countries supported the idea of a financial transaction tax – and France would fight to make it reality.

“The G20 recognises the initiatives of some member states to tax the financial sector, with various objectives including a tax on financial transactions to support development,” he said.
