Australia has dumped reigning champions South Africa out of Rugby Union’s World Cup.

A decisive penalty in the 72nd minute for the Wallabies gave them an 11-9 victory in a match which South Africa had dominated. Their coach Peter De Villiers quit after the defeat.

Piri Weepu was the hero for the All Blacks. He kicked seven penalties to set up a semi final clash with Australia. New Zealand struggled in the early part of their quarter final against Argentina, before turning up the heat to win 33 – 10.

As England prepare to fly home after their humiliation at the hands of France, who meet Wales in the other semi final, The Rugby Football Union has announced it will carry out a review of England’s World Cup campaign before deciding whether Martin Johnson is to continue as manager.
