Ben Youngs came off the bench to score the only try as England battled to a 13-9 victory over Argentina in an error-riddled World Cup Pool B opener in Auckland on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the Group Simon Danielli scored two late tries to save Scotland’s blushes against Romania.

Another pre-tournament favourite France didn’t have it all their own way either as Les Bleus had to dig deep to see off the ‘Brave Blossoms’ of Japan.

Despite some sloppy rugby at times France did manage to score six tries and with a 47-21 victory earned a bonus point in Pool A, which also includes hosts New Zealand, Tonga and Canada.

Fiji came from behind to beat Namibia in their Pool D opener.

Winger Vereniki Goneva scored four tries to help the Pacific islanders to a 49-25 triumph
