Reports from Iran say security forces used violence to break up recent environmental rallies as protesters demanded action to save the largest saltwater lake in the Middle East.

Lake Urmia has dried considerably and is described as an ecological disaster.

The protests in Tabriz and Urmia reportedly followed parliament’s rejection of a rescue plan.
