Last minute preparations are underway for the 68th Venice film festival which opens tonight in the picturesque Italian city. A star-studded guest list has been put together, following criticism of what was seen as a low-key event last year.

Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna are among those expected.

But the guest of honour has to be Hollywood heavyweight George Clooney,, who has already arrived in town with a boatload of showbiz friends.

His political drama “The ides of March” opens the festival with a red carpet screening tonight. The 50-year-old acts in and also directs the film.
