It is the summer festival season but at one get-together near Berlin hackers not hippies have been letting it all hang out.

Forget sex, drugs and rock and roll. Information technology tempted a bunch of enthusiasts to an old Soviet-era airfield.

They were hosted by Germany’s Chaos Computer Club, a group that has made a name by exposing breaches in security.

“You can meet new interesting people since this is one of the biggest events of its kind,” said one festival-goer.

“This is not a gathering of online criminals with bad intentions.” another said. “I think most hackers here are interested in technology. They want to find out how it works, where the limits are.”

And don’t underestimate the campers’ high-flying ambitions. Organisers are now working on sending a hacker into space.
