Despite winning seven medals at the world championships in Shanghai, America’s Michael Phelps was left stunned by fellow countryman Ryan Lochte in the 200m freestyle on Sunday.

The 26 year old, who finished with four gold medals, two silvers and a bronze had previously told journalists that this meeting would be the ideal preparation ahead of his final Olympics in London next year.

While Phelps said he was pleased with his performance in Shanghai, he also acknowledged the improvement his rivals had made in recent years suggesting this would only serve to motivate him further.
