At least nine people have died after their boat collided with a barge and sank on the main river through Moscow. Some managed to swim ashore and watched the emergency unfold from the bank.

The private boat had been rented for a birthday party. The collision happened in the early hours.

Divers are searching the sunken craft. One person is still missing.

Turkish and American people are said to have been among those on board.

An inquiry is underway. Russia’s Deputy Emergencies Minister told reporters the boat’s owner has been sanctioned three times this year already for overloading his vessel.

This tragedy comes only three weeks after that of the River Volga. Then, 122 people died when the pleasure boat they were on capsized while out on a day trip.

With elections pending, the number of recent disasters has prompted the government to condemn the state of the country’s infrastructure and what is described as “endemic” regulatory corner-cutting.
