Five French soldiers have been killed in a suicide attack in Afghanistan. Four more troops and three Afghan civilians were seriously wounded.

Their convoy was hit in the Tagab area north-east of the capital Kabul just a day after the surprise visit of the French president.

Nicolas Sarkozy announced that a quarter of French troops would be withdrawn from Afghanistan by the end of next year.

It is the bloodiest attack on the French NATO contingent since an ambush in August 2008.
