Australia’s Cadel Evans edged out Spain’s Alberto Contador to claim stage four of the Tour de France following a thrilling uphill finish at Mur-de-Bretagne on Tuesday.

Despite early mechanical problems, the 34 year old edged in front of the group inside the final few hundred metres, with Kazakhstan’s Alexandre Vinokourov and Contador just behind.

The three times Tour de France winner tried to overtake Evans metres before the finish line, but it wasn’t to be as the Australian held on, eventually winning by a few centimetres to claim his first victory in this year’s race.
