She got there in the end.

But Angela Merkel’s passage to India was more complicated than expected after Iran briefly refused to let the German leader’s plane enter its airspace.

The Chancellor declined to be drawn on the issue but her spokesman said he had never experienced anything like it.

Iran’s block on Merkel’s flight path forced her plane to circle over Turkey for almost two hours before it was given clearance. Berlin has summoned the Iranian ambassador over the incident.

Why Tehran said no is not immediately clear.

But last week the EU, including Germany, extended sanctions against the Islamic Republic amid a lack of progress in talks on its nuclear programme.
