Some countries go years without success. Not so the latest winner of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Just three years after entering for the first time, Azerbaijan is officially Europe’s favourite following a spectacular show in Dusseldorf.
Ell & Nikki led the field throughout the voting, notching up 221 points with their love song “Running Scared”.
The duo are veterans of music festivals but the spectacle in front of a TV audience of an estimated 100 million has catapulted them into superstardom.
It also means the small Caucasus nation of eight million people gets to host next year’s contest.
In a hard fought battle for second place, Italy’s Raphael Gualazzi finally stole silver with a late surge in the vote. The country rejoined Eurovision this year after a long absence.
Good old fashioned boy band material from Sweden took third, while the UK came 11th – nothing special but a big improvement on last year.
