Violence has flared in Athens for the second day running as a demonstration over alleged police brutality turned nasty.
Thursday’s confrontation between a group of protesters and security forces came as four police officers were suspended amid a probe into ugly scenes at an earlier rally.
Those clashes occurred at an anti-austerity march, coinciding with a nationwide strike on Wednesday. One protester suffered serious head injuries and is in a critical but stable condition after brain surgery.
Greek police have long been accused of heavy-handed treatment of demonstrators. Internet images from Wednesday of officers hitting and kicking a protester have caused widespread outrage.
