She is beautiful, photogenic and young. That is a good start. Already the paparazzi are in love with her. The public too appear to be falling for her charms. It’s all very reminiscent of another certain royal thirty years ago.
So is Kate the new Diana? Such comparisons are inevitable, but commentators warn of making too many assumptions.
Stephen Bates is the Guardian’s Royal Correspondent.
“She’s very different in personality. She’s 29, Diana was only 20. And I think officialdom in the Palace and elsewhere has learned a lot of lessons about how Diana was treated, and how she was prepared for the worldwide celebrity that she was thrust into. I think they’ll be a lot more cautious about Kate and I think all the signs are she’s much better prepared to deal with it.”
But inspite of the differences the similarities are there and some of them are quite deliberate. The Prince has given Kate his mother’s engagement ring perhaps to keep his mother’s memory alive in the minds of the public, not they would forget her.
Arthur Edwards is The Sun newspaper’s Royal Photographer.
“One of the things that William probably doesn’t want is his wife to be compared to his mother. You know, that’s another thing that they are quite concerned about, but it is inevitable the comparisons will be made. Kate just looked amazing, from the very beginning and all of a sudden you found that same feeling from 30 years earlier whenever Princess Diana came along “
Kate has been described as a combination of natural beauty and glamour. A young woman both ordinary and modern – the same adjectives used thirty years ago about Diana just before she walked innocently into the royal spotlight.
