Along the Via Dolorosa, the Way of the Cross as it is known in English, ‘the way of grief’ in Latin, Christian pilgrims have been gathering in the Old City of Jerusalem for Good Friday. According to tradition, Jesus Christ their saviour was crucified on a Friday and rose from the dead the following Sunday. They will mark Easter this Sunday.
They follow in the footsteps they believe he took, led to be nailed up to die. Thousands of pilgrims, tourists and clergy from all Christian denominations took part in the rites. Protestants, Catholics and Orthodox believers celebrate Easter this year on the same date. This is rare, because Western churches observe the Gregorian calendar and Eastern churches the Julian calendar.
