NATO says it has destroyed 15 government tanks around Misrata, the last rebel bastion in western Libya.
But 30 rebels are also reported killed as Muammar Gaddafi’s forces maintain their assault on the port town. Analysts say the veteran leader needs to regain Misrata if he is to survive a prolonged conflict.
Meanwhile a Red Cross-chartered vessel landed in the port, bringing much needed medical supplies.
NATO also took out two government tanks near the oil town of Brega in the east and says it intercepted a rebel-flown Mig aircraft and advised it to land.
Gaddafi troops have pushed rebels in the east further back towards Ajdabiya.
Back-and-forth battles around Ajdabiya and Brega have been continuing, as fresh diplomatic efforts to end the crisis get underway.
