At least 15 people are reported to have been killed and more than 40 injured in a Taliban suicide bomb attack on a police headquarters in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar.

Most of the dead are thought to be police officers.

The assault appears to be an attempt to raid the police headquarteres in central Kandahar. The region has become the focus of a NATO offensive against Taliban insurgents.

A spokesman for NATO said a car bomb exploded outside the building before two suicide bombers blew themselves up on the street outside. He said a third attacker, wearing a suicide vest, was shot dead before he could detonate his explosives.

Coalition and Afghan troops exchanged gunfire with the insurgents in an attempt to bring the situation under control.

The Taliban have said they carried out the attack.
