The Irish Green Party has withdrawn support for Brian Cowen’s coalition government.
The party claims it will support the passage of the final piece of legislation underpinning the 2011 austerity budget from the opposition benches.
The move, though not unexpected, is a blow to Cowen who resigned as Fianna Fail leader on Saturday.
The decision to pull the plug on the coalition and resign their ministries means the general election, set for March 11, will be brought forward with many predicting a Fianna Fail meltdown.
Ireland, under Cowen, sought a 85 billion euro bailout package to save the Emerald Isle from financial catastrophe.
