Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has announced he is to take medical leave, his second in two years. The 55-year-old had a liver transplant in January 2009.

The news sent Apple shares in Europe tumbling more than eight percent, reviving concerns of the long-term future of the company.

He will remain as chief executive involved in major strategic decisions.
