Snoopy, the beloved dog from the Charlie Brown cartoons has opened the Macy Thanksgiving Parade.

The annual tradition in New York often draws tens of thousands and despite a brisk chill in the air, this year was no exception.

A jubilant crowd watched as a variety of entertaining characters was laid on for them.

Lady Liberty herself brought some grace and tradition to proceedings, as she sauntered slowly by.

The event started in 1924 when workers from the Macy’s department store in Harlem made the journey to the flagship store on 34th street.

It has been a much loved, homegrown American tradition ever since.
