Muslim pilgrims descended on Saudi Arabia’s Mina Valley on Tuesday carrying bags of pebbles to symbolically stone Satan.

Today is the third day of the annual hajj to Mecca and it also marks the start of Eid al-Adha, known as the Feast of Sacrifice.

The stoning lasts three days until the end of hajj on Sunday.

Some three million people from around the world were attending the pilgrimage this year, which in the past has seen deadly crushes and pileup.

However, authorities have now revamped the area to ease access and prevent stampedes.

At this time, sheep and cattle are slaughtered in rememberance Abraham’s near-sacrifice of his son.

The meat is then shared between family member and the poor.
