The Democratic leader in the Senate Harry Reid won one of the most high-profile races of the midterm elections after a brutal battle.

His opponent in Nevada was Republican Sharron Angle who was strongly backed by the Tea Party.

Reid, who is a former boxer said despite Republican gains it was not the end of the fight, just the start of the next round.

He told his jubilant supporters in Las Vegas: “See, I’ve been in some pretty tough fights in my day. They’ve been on the street, they’ve been in the boxing ring and they’ve been in the United States Senate. I have to admit this has been one of the toughest. But it’s nothing compared to the fights families of Nevada are facing right now.”

Harry Reid stays as leader in the Senate with a reduced majority for the Democrats, but his victory was a rare bright spot for them and at the end of the day the people who were celebrating were mostly Republicans.
