The man who blew himself up in Istanbul’s main square on Sunday night injuring 32 people was from Turkey’s mainly Kurdish southeast, according to city authorities.

Turkey’s Anatolian state news agency says 24-year-old Vedat Acar was behind the blast. He was born in Van province near the Iranian border, it said.

He is said to have belonged to a “separatist terrorist organisation” but there is no explicit mention of the outlawed militant PKK group.

The Kurdish separatists have denied being behind the attack but a breakaway faction is thought to be against its ceasefire.

Seven people have also reportedly been arrested in connection with the attack.
