Turkey and Germany to forge closer security ties

Turkey has asked Germany for help in its fight against Kurdish rebels.

The request came as German interior minister Thomas de Maiziere met his counterpart Besir Atalay at the start of a three day visit to Turkey.

Following talks, both governments announced they would set up a joint committee to work closer in security and counter terrorism.

Berlin is also expected to push for greater protection for Turkey’s minority Christian community during the visit

Some 2.4 million Turkish immigrants live in Germany, many of them ethnic Kurds.

The Kurdistan Workers Party or PKK has been blacklisted as a terrorist organisation by the EU.

Despite that, Ankara has complained states in the 27 member bloc have not done enough to stop the party’s support network.
