The US Middle East envoy gave a positive assessment of the start of the peace talks, using the words “productive” and “cordial” and saying there was “good faith and seriousness of purpose”. George Mitchell also revealed that further talks in the Middle East are planned.

He said: “They agreed to meet again on September 14 and 15 in the region, and roughly two weeks thereafter … every two weeks thereafter. Of course, continued interactions at other levels between the parties, and also yet others involving the United States, will take place between those meetings.”

Mitchell said both leaders agreed on a goal of reaching a deal within a year, with the aim of resolving all of the core issues.
