A New York cab driver who says he was stabbed because he is Muslim has spoken for the first time about his ordeal.

Ahmed Sharif, 43, described how a client he picked up on Tuesday night was friendly at first but then attacked him with a knife, cutting his throat, face and upper arm.

A 21-year-old student has been charged with attempted murder and committing a hate crime.

Police say Michael Enright, who spent five weeks in Afghanistan with US Marines in May making a documentary, was drunk.

The attack comes amid heightened tension in New York over plans to build a Muslim cultural centre close to Ground Zero.

The project has divided the city and the country with rallies both for and against it.

Several community leaders have expressed fear that the wave of anger over the centre could prompt attacks against Muslims.
