In Portugal, firefighting teams are said to have “contained” one of the biggest wildfires in the natural park of Serra da Estrela near the northern border with Spain.
The civil protection authority also says fires in the Peneda-Geres National Park along the border with Spanish Galicia are “under control” following the deployment of water-carrying aircraft.
Wildfires have been tearing through the arid northern woodlands leaving a landscape described by government officials as resembling a “true theatre of war”.
The country’s interior ministry has activated the European Union’s Civil Protection mechanism to get additional firefighting equipment.
Some 25 active wildfires are still burning in several regions across the country.
