New EU boat passenger rights launched

New EU boat passenger rights launched
Text size Aa Aa

Boat passengers in European waters will have more rights as of 2012, under new regulations approved by the European Parliament.

When, for reasons within the operator’s control, a regular passenger boat or ferry service is cancelled or more than 90 minutes late in departing, the passengers will have the right to be re-routed or reimbursed the ticket cost, and the right to be fed.

Regardless of whether they choose to travel or not, the passengers will be entitled to compensation of up to half the ticket price for voyages of varying lengths which are delayed.

If delay requires passengers to stay somewhere before completing their journey, the operator will have to pay up to three nights in a hotel, at up to €80 per night.
