There have been scenes of heroism and desperation in Brazil as torrential flooding devastated towns and villages in the northeast of the country.
Dozens of people have been reported killed in the states of Alagoas and Pernambuco while many hundreds are missing.
One woman explained that she was saved by her son, before he in turn was swept away.
Days of heavy rain caused a river dam to burst, leaving more than 40 000 people without shelter.
“It has destroyed our town. It has destroyed everything,” said one victim.
The federal government has launched an emergency relief operation, providing food and medical supplies to the region.
