Six times and reigning world MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi is likely to miss most of the rest of this season, virtually ending his bid for another title in 2010.

Rossi suffered a serious compound fracture to the right shin after coming off his bike in free practice for Sunday’s race in Mugello, Italy.

Medics say he will undergo an operation today but that normal recovery time for such an injury is two to three months.

The Italian rider is currently second in this season’s MotoGP standings behind Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo.

Rossi is chasing a tenth career title and his seventh in the top MotoGP category.
