The British monarch Queen Elizabeth has delivered the new policy agenda of prime minister David Cameron’s coalition government.
Laced with traditional pomp and circumstance the ceremony ushered in a new political era and came only a day after the government announced plans to cut public spending by more than 7 billion euros in this year.
‘‘The first priority is to reduce the deficit and restore economic growth. Action will be taken to accelerate the reduction of the structural budget deficit. A new office for budget responsibility will provide confidence in the management of the public finances,’‘ announced the Queen.
Other policy measures include parliaments with fixed five year terms and a referendum on changes to the voting system, a key Liberal Democrat demand. It is the 56th state opening of parliament by the Queen during her reign.
