The first prize to be given out at Cannes – the Grand Prix at Critics’ Week – has been awarded to the Danish director Janus Metz for his controversial Afghan war documentary “Armadillo.”

The film follows a handful of young soldiers on a six-month posting and documents a growing cynicism among troops becoming hooked on adrenaline while living an adventure for a few months far from home.
