There were solemn scenes in Warsaw on Tuesday morning as the body of Poland’s first lady Maria Kaczynska arrives home.

She will lie in state alongside her husband at the Presidential Palace, until their joint funeral takes place on Sunday.

A host of dignitaries are expected to attend including Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The first lady’s coffin was met by Marta, the only daughter of the Presidential couple. She was joined in mourning by Lech Kaczynski’s twin brother Jaroslaw.

The nation of 38 million has seen an outpouring of grief since the plane carrying a blue ribbon delegation of Poland’s leading dignitaries crashed in thick fog in Western Russia last weekend.

A memorial service to remember all 96 victims will be held on Saturday.

Military chiefs, ministers, opposition figures and the governor of the country’s central bank were all among the dead.
