Polish President Lech Kaczynski has died in a plane crash near an airport in western Russia, killing all people on board.
The plane came down in a forest close to the airport of Smolensk.
Officals at the scence said there were no survivors, confirming Kacyznski’s death.
The Polish government is set to hold an emergency meeting later on Saturday.
Reports say Kacyznski’s plane clipped trees as it struggled to cope in poor weather conditions.
The Polish foreign ministry later confirmed the president’s wife was on board the plane, along with several other senior government figures.
The governor of Poland’s Central Bank was also said to be one of the passengers.
Mr Kaczynski was due to visit Smolensk to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, when Soviet troops killed thousands of Poles.
The 60-year-old was elected president of Poland in 2005.
