Lithuania’s former foreign minister, Vygaudas Usackas, is to become the European Union’s new top official in Afghanistan, on the recommendation of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton.

Ashton dismissed concerns relating to a parliamentary probe into a possible US secret service prison in Lithuania, in which Usackas clashed with his own president.

In Kabul, Usackas will coordinate the bloc’s security and development aid with Afghan authorities and other key players, such as NATO and the United Nations.
