There have been violent clashes in Iran between police and groups opposed to the government in two cities according to an opposition website. Iranian TV has also reported pro-government demonstrations in Qom.

The opposition protests in Ispahan and Najafabad led to at least 50 arrests according to the website, with many injuries.

The reports of trouble came two days after the funeral of the reformist cleric, Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, though there is no independent confirmation of the details.

Iran’s police chief has warned the opposition would face a fierce confrontation if the protests continued.
