Auschwitz sign stolen

One of the most poignant symbols of the Holocaust has been stolen. Overnight, the iron sign above the entrance to the Auschwitz concentration camp was taken. The sign bears the infamous Nazi slogan, “Arbeit Macht Frei” or “Work Sets You Free”. The sign has already been replaced with a replica. Polish police say it could be someone with a political agenda or pranksters.

Understandably, this theft has upset some Holocaust survivors. Noah Flug, Head of the International Auschwitz Organisation of Holocaust Survivors said: “They want to deny the Holocaust and the Shoa, and I think this symbol is very important. Also when we, that have been there as prisoners, shall not be no more, Auschwitz is a symbol. You can see what happened there.”

Auschwitz is the most notorious of the Nazi concentration camps. Over one million people died there during the Second World War – most of whom were Jewish.
