The glitz and glamour of the cinema have come to Marrakech, with the opening of the Moroccan city’s ninth international film festival.
A total of 15 movies are in competition this year, for an event that is fast becoming one of the most important world cinema festivals. Festival Director Mélita Toscan du Plantier said: “This year is very strong, very much for cinema lovers. We have lots of directors from right around the world, the big names: Kusturica, Jarmusch, Cuaron, Kiarostami. We have a great jury of cinema-lovers, so the discussions will be great. We’ve got some magnificent competition.” This year special tribute is being paid to South Korean cinema, but there is also a lot of praise for the host of the festival. Actor Saïd Taghmaoui said: “Morocco is in the middle of expansion. In the space of 10 years some extraordinary things have been achieved thanks to his majesty. We’re here to support that and to say ‘yes we can’.” The festival runs until December 12.
