Student demonstrations in Vienna have spread to other Austrian universities in what has become a national movement for change.
A sit-in at Vienna University’s lecture hall has inspired thousands of other students all over the country to demand the government ploughs more money into the education system, even it means having to pay for it themselves.
Protesting student Dominik Karas said: “To increase the standard of education it would be better to reinstall tuition fees.”
More than 30,000 students took to the streets in Vienna calling for better learning conditions and an overhaul of the degree system, which they say is little more than off-the-job training.
The clamour for better value from the education authorities has led to protests by students in Graz, Linz, Klagenfurt and Innsbruck.
